SEEKING NOMINATIONS - BOARD OF DIRECTORS
GAY, LESBIAN, AND STRAIGHT EDUCATION NETWORK (GLSEN)
February 2000
THE ORGANIZATION
- GLSEN is the largest national organization that unites teachers, parents,
students and concerned citizens to work together to end anti-gay bias in
schools across the U.S.
- GLSEN was founded as a small volunteer group in Boston in 1990. It led
the fight in 1993 resulting in Massachusetts banning anti-gay discrimination
in its public schools and becoming the first state to establish a statewide
program to combat anti-gay bias in public schools. GLSEN became a national
organization in 1994.
- Governed by a 30-member Board of Directors, GLSEN has an annual operating
budget of $2.35 million and a professional staff of 20. GLSEN has over
20,000 members nationwide, over 90 local chapters and a national office in
New York City, with field offices in San Francisco and Atlanta, with plans
to add a third field office in Chicago and a public policy office in
Washington during 2000.
- Over a third of GLSEN members are non-gay, and an equal number work
outside of schools.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Charged with GLSEN's governance, policy making and fundraising leadership,
the Board meets three times annually; Directors are expected to make at
least two of these meetings per year.
- Directors serve for three-year terms, and may serve up to a maximum of six
years on the Board.
- Every Director serves on at least one of the following committees:
Fundraising, Field, Board Management, Public Policy, In-School Programming,
and Finance; these committees require some work between meetings, and
usually a monthly conference call with other committee members of 1-2 hours.
- Each Director makes an annual gift and sets an individual dollar-specific
fundraising goal for each year.
- GLSEN maintains Directors' and officers' liability insurance in a minimum
amount of $1 million.
PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
- YOUTH LEADERS (younger than 24 years of age) on LGBT issues at the local,
regional & national level.
- Prominent philanthropists or community leaders with a commitment to
GLSEN's mission who will bring access and influence to GLSEN, particularly
from under represented regions of the country, especially the major
metropolitan areas of the South and Midwest.
- Business leaders, irrespective of sexual orientation, with backgrounds in
finance, non-profit legal issues, public policy, and/or
fundraising/marketing.
- Experience as a Director or Trustee with other not-for-profit
institutions, and a track record of effective Board participation, is
desirable, but not required.
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Directors must have a commitment to equality for, and service to, the LGBT
community nationally and to youth and education issues in particular.
- Candidates must have innate leadership, management and interpersonal
skills, patience and good humor, and must be able to participate in and
sustain collaborative group efforts.
- Candidates must be committed to supporting GLSEN in making its membership,
Board and staff representative and inclusive of the entire community,
including people of varied ethnicity, gender, race, class, age, sexual
orientation and physical abilities. Women, people of color, and non LGBT
people are especially encouraged to apply.
