Dear Safe Schools members and friends ...

FUNDING RESOURCES (thanks to NYAC for this):

1. Funders packet on LGBT youth is available

Funders for Lesbian and Gay Issues (formerly the Working Group on Funding Lesbian and Gay Issues) has recently developed an informational packet that is focused specifically on LGBT youth. Undertaking a pro-active approach to educating funders on these issues the packet has been distributed to Youth Development program officers at more than 400 of the largest independent, corporate and community foundations throughout the country. The packet includes an issue brief, a profile of a foundation that funds LGBT youth projects and a philosophical piece, authored by a grantmaker, about the importance of supporting LGBT youth programs. These are easily reproducible materials and it is our hope that they will serve as a resource for your grantseeking activities. If you would like to obtain a copy of the youth Packet, please call 212-475-2930 or e-mail info@lgbtfunders.org. Please mention that you heard about this resource through NYAC.

2. Grants available to NYAC members for books and other resources

"Free to Learn" is an exciting project aimed at improving school communities. The project offers high school-based Gay-Straight Alliances, GLSEN chapters, PFLAG chapters, and NYAC member organizations with a grant opportunity for LGBT-related book and video donations to individual school libraries. Rather than simply being a means of donating books to schools that may or may not want or use them, "Free to Learn" is designed to ensure that such materials are meaningfully integrated into school programming.

GLSEN has been able to secure funding to offer $150 grants to PFLAG and GLSEN chapters, NYAC member organizations, or GSAs who meet with school librarians to discuss their collections on LGBT issues and to offer them the opportunity to expand those collections with books and materials from the GLSEN Bookstore. These grants are available due to the generosity of "Adam:A Queer Youth Project," a funding collaboration of Ralph Alpert, Michael Dively, and Weston Milliken. Currently about 60 grants are available and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis until funding is exhausted.

GLSEN will process applications and provide technical support and advice through its website. (You may access the specific application form and additional information by going to www.glsen.org and do a search for "Free to Learn" or you may go directly to the Free to Learn URL: http://www.glsen.org/binary-data/GLSEN_ARTICLES/pdf_file/148.pdf

What are the goals of "Free to Learn"?

What are the benefits to PFLAG chapters, NYAC member organizations, GLSEN chapters, or GSAs? What are the requirements for participating in Free to Learn? We hope that you will avail yourselves of this great opportunity to create change in your community's schools.
