NEW GUIDELINES SET LIMITS ON SEX EDUCATION IN CLASS
Proposed guidelines for teaching about sexuality:
HOMOSEXUALITY - In elementary schools, teachers can answer questions about
it succintly, but should refer children to their parents or other trusted
adults for more information. In middle and senior high schools, teachers
should discuss tolerance for people with different sexual orientation, and
abstinence. "No discussion should occur about the appropriateness of this
orientation." Students should be referred to other adults such as parents and
nurses for more information.
SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES, INCLUDING AIDS - Children in primary
grades should be given general information, not about sexual diseases, but
about healthy lifestyle habits and germs. Students will learn about AIDS,
abstinence, and how to say "no" beginning in fourth grade, and continue with
more information in fifth and sixth grades. In high school, they'll get the
same information, but also will learn about community resources where they
could turn for help.
