2. Bay Area Premiere of "OLIVER BUTTON IS A STAR" - GSA Network Benefit Event

Sunday January 27, 2002 10AM to Noon
Castro Theater, San Francisco

OLIVER BUTTON IS A STAR, a 'docu-performance' for all families, is an hour-long video program that explores bullying, tolerance and positive alternatives for expressing children's gender differences.

Filmmakers John Scagliotti (Before & After Stonewall, In the Life) and Dan Hunt (After Stonewall) use the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus Production of Tomie dePaola's children's classic book, OLIVER BUTTON IS A SISSY as their narrative structure, interweaving a mix of animation, archival film, news stories, home movies and personal interviews with such well known figures as arctic explorer Ann Bancroft, dancer/choreographer Bill T. Jones, makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin and Tomie dePaola, who offer moving accounts of the defining moment in their childhood when they were forced to confront conventional constructions of "masculine" and "feminine" (Tomie dePaola "acting like Shirley Temple or Mae West", Ann Bancroft playing Tarzan, Kevyn Aucoin being subjected to endless beatings in school because of his "effeminate" behavior, Bill T. Jones "sitting-like-a-girl").

OLIVER BUTTON IS A STAR is being released at an important time in America as its theme strikes a deep chord that is currently resonating throughout our society. The almost daily headlines about young boys, alienated and neglected, causing violence, hate crimes and needless suffering confront us with the question - What does it take to pass into manhood? In its whimsically powerful way Oliver Button's story presents a positively transforming answer.

A benefit for Frameline, Gay-Straight Alliance Network, and the Twin Cities Gay Men's Choir

Sponsored by The San Francisco Foundation

10. Speakers' Bureau Training at Pacific Center

The Pacific Center is hosting a new speakers bureau training on Saturday February 16, 2002 from 9am - 3:30pm, here at the Pacific Center. Please help me get the word out to all our groups, our friends, our family, our friends' families!

I know you're all thinking, "But I don't know anyone who isn't already busy up to their ears!" That's ok, most of our speakers are too. The speakers bureau is very flexible. After completing the training, speakers will be added to the list of current speakers and will receive information about upcoming presentations ("gigs"). Speakers choose which gigs they attend and there is never any pressure to fulfill a "quota" of gigs. Every speaker is very valuable towards increasing education and tolerance on sexual orientation and/or gender identity.

Currently there are these two panels, sexual orientation and gender identity. We get requests for speakers from high schools, colleges, and community organizations throughout the East Bay. And right now the Pacific Center has an amazing panel of very dedicated speakers, many who do more than two presentations a month! And: the more speakers, the more presentations, the better our communities become.

Any one who is interested in this training or has more questions should call me at 510.548.8283 ext 231 or email Lawrance@pacificcenter.org to sign up.

Peace,

Lawrance Helen McClung
Program Director, Pacific Center

12. New Bay Area Organization for Queer Young Adults

NEW SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATION MOBILIZES QUEER YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH VOLUNTEER PROJECTS AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

MISSION

Q-Force is a community-based organization that brings together San Francisco Bay Area lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and questioning young people ages 18 to 28. By coordinating volunteer opportunities and social activities, Q-Force supports communities in need and empowers its members.

BACKGROUND

Q-Force formed to provide a structure for activism and community service for young people. Studies have shown that people volunteer more often when asked to do so and Q-Force provides this impetus for queer young adults. After noticing the lack of young faces at major queer community events, Q-Force organizers saw the need for a community-service and social organization for those too old for youth programs but not yet a part of the adult queer community.

Organizers also noticed that the San Francisco Bay Area is a major location of queer "transplants." Many young queer adults move to the area because of its reputation for gay-friendliness and Q-Force provides a vital opportunity for newcomers to become involved in the queer community through social events as well as performing needed volunteer work inside and outside of the queer community. Furthermore, many people do not "come out" as queer until they are in their 20s. Q-Force provides valuable support and friendships for people who are identifying with the queer community for the first time.

CONTACT Q-FORCE

For more information or to volunteer for upcoming Q-Force events call (415) 626-7075, email qforcesf@yahoo.com or visit http://www.geocities.com/qforcesf.
