Call for Applications:Curriculum Consultant

Essential Functions:
Develop two high school training programs on inter-group violence--one for use with students and the other for use with faculty, staff and parents/guardians--that are age-specific and population-specific to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGTBQ) youth in the racially, ethnically and economically diverse areas of the Los Angeles Unified School District. This process will include the development of a video and two comprehensive manuals with strategies, activities, curricula and a detailed list of resources. As part of this development, the manuals will be piloted, evaluated and modified with the assistance of Safe Haven staff and our community partners.

The goal is to strengthen and formalize the Safe Haven Project's core curricula, and build the Project's capacity to become a local and national resource.

Program Summary:
The Safe Haven Project of the LA Gay and Lesbian Center is a school-based program designed to help make LA high schools safer and more supportive for all students by addressing anti-LGBTQ harassment and violence.

Qualifications and Experience:
Required

  1. M.A., M.Ed., Ph.D. or Ed.D., preferably in Education or a related field with specialization in Curriculum and Instruction.
  2. A minimum of five years' teaching experience, preferably with high school-aged youth in diverse urban settings.
  3. Demonstrated ability in curriculum development for both high school-aged students and high school faculty through publication record and/or teacher in-service trainings.
  4. Demonstrated experience in and knowledge of innovative teaching methodologies, including multimedia lessons, games and simulations.
  5. Experience disseminating curricula at the local and national levels.
  6. Advanced knowledge of local and national resources designed to meet the educational needs of LGBTQ students.
  7. Advanced knowledge of the particular learning needs and challenges of LGBTQ youth and youth of color in an ethnically and socio-economically diverse urban environment.
  8. Ability to work independently while meeting organizational deadlines.
  9. Outstanding research, organization and interpersonal skills.
  10. Excellent facilitation, public speaking and written communication skills.
  11. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with women and men of diverse races, ethnicities, ages, socio-economic backgrounds, physical abilities, sexual orientations and gender identities in a multi-cultural environment.
Preferred
  1. Knowledge of the Los Angeles Unified School system.
  2. Experience in video production, including shooting and editing.
  3. Superior computer skills including database operations and video editing.
Compensation:
  1. Consultant Fee:$35,000
  2. Expenses:$15,000 (includes program materials, participant stipends, test-marketing of training and final production of training manuals.)
