Dear Safe Schools Coalition members and friends,
(1) Colin Higgins Foundation Calls for Nominations for Courage Awards 2002
*****************************
San Francisco, CA - The Colin Higgins Foundation proudly opens nominations for the 2002 Courage Awards. The Foundation annually awards $10,000 each to four individuals who have shown exceptional bravery in the face of discrimination, intolerance and bigotry based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Finalists will be contacted in April, and honorees will be announced in San Francisco at an awards banquet in May. Past Courage Award winners have ranged from allied Boy Scout Steven Cozza of Scouting for All to California teacher Dana Rivers, who lost her job when she came out as a transgender woman.
Eligibility:
Nominations must be received through the online nominations form by 6 PM (PST) on Friday, February 22, 2002, or postmarked on that date. Visit http://www.colinhiggins.org/courageawards to submit a nomination online or to download a nomination form for fax or mail. Nominations sent or postmarked after the due date and time will not be considered.
Colin Higgins, acclaimed screenwriter, director and producer of films such as Harold and Maude and Nine to Five, established The Colin Higgins Foundation in 1986. In addition to the Courage Awards, the Foundation also funds film scholarships and has supported over 390 LGBTQQ organizations. The Colin Higgins Foundation was the first organization to support the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), which now boasts chapters nationwide. The Colin Higgins Foundation is administered by the Tides Foundation, a larger parent foundation which partners with donors to increase and organize resources for social change. In the past decade, the Tides Foundation has awarded more than $100 million in grants to community-based organizations and progressive nonprofits.

The deadline for a cover letter and resume is postmark/fax/email on April 12, 2002. We can help you find low-cost or hosted housing in San Francisco. Minimum age is 16 if you live locally and 18 if you are coming from out of town. For more information go to: http://www.colage.org/Internship.html
BOARD OF DIRECTORS:COLAGE is currently recruiting new members for our Board of Directors. Our next in-person board meeting will be March 8-11, 2002 in the Bay Area, ideally new candidates will be available for this meeting. You don't need to have previous experience with being on a Board of Directors --you just need some time, a lot of commitment to making the world better for people with LGBT parents, and the willingness to roll up your sleeves and get to work. We try to keep our board diverse in terms of geographic location, economic background, gender, race, sexual orientation, age, family type, and skills and interests. If you think you might be interested please send me an email immediately (okay by Monday) so we can discuss it further: director@colage.org .
HALF-TIME JOB:Lastly, COLAGE will soon begin hiring a half-time position out of our San Francisco office. If you think you might be interested in working for the only organization in the world specifically devoted to people with LGBT parents, subscribe to NetNews and keep your eyes peeled for the job announcement.
