Building Bridges Solano Pride Center's Second Annual Conference Focuses on Health Issues (Vallejo, CA; Nov. 3)

Fairfield, California (October 24, 2001) Solano Pride Center and co-sponsors Kaiser Permanente and NorthBay Medical are hosting the Second Annual Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning (GLBTQ) Youth Conference on Saturday, November 3, 2001 on the beautiful campus of California Maritime Academy in Vallejo. The conference begins with registration at 9:00 AM and ends at 5:30 PM. Lunch will be served and is included in the cost of registration. Registration is free for youth 25 and under. The pre-registration fee for adults is $15 and $25 at the door.
The Conference focus is on health issues and will include workshops for and by youth; for parents and teachers; doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals; community service providers, health providers, political and community leaders; gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth and adults; and for the community at large. Barbara Kondylis, Solano County Supervisor, District 1, Vallejo will deliver the Conference Opening Address. Keynote speaker Chris Sandoval is an internationally recognized motivational speaker. Mr. Sandoval is currently Director of the Multicultural AIDS Resource Center of California (MARCC) and is recognized internationally as an expert in the field of managing diversity and cross-cultural communication.
Representatives from Solano County will present workshops providing the most up-to-date information on HIV/AIDS and Lyon-Martin Women's Health Services will share the latest information on women's health. Nationally known Dr. Lemuel Arnold of Kaiser Permanente will discuss Culturally Competent Care in the medical field. Dr. Arnold was one of the pioneers who created the Cultural Competent Care Handbooks used by Kaiser Permanente nation-wide. He will be giving out copies of the handbook at his workshop.
Afternoon workshops will center on issues of developing tolerance in our schools, equipping our GLBT youth to create safe schools, looking at the diversity in families and understanding transgendered people. Other workshops will assist GLBT entrepreneurs looking at the business world. Resource and exhibit tables will also be available for browsing. Entertainment will be provided throughout the day with locally known San Francisco comedian Lisa Geduldig, a poetry slam, and local DJ "Starring...You!" performing at the social closing the conference.
The Solano Pride Center was founded in 1998 to promote activities that foster the well being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered persons in Solano County.
