Calif. School Board Member Fights Secret Deal
By Karen Johnson, California correspondent

A school board member in Southern California is threatening a lawsuit against her colleagues in order to prevent a series of homosexual biographies from showing up in school libraries.

Dr. Alexandria Coronado, a trustee with the Anaheim (Calif.) Union High School District, has filed a complaint against fellow board members, claiming they violated the California open meeting law by gathering in closed session to settle a censorship complaint lodged by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

"I have personally read every single one of the books that is in the lawsuit, and these books are totally inappropriate for school-age children," Coronado said. "Whatever happened to protecting the innocence of America's school children? Why can't we keep them innocent until we get them out of our school system?

The books in question arrived at one of the district's junior high schools in a promotional package.

Attorney Jim Lacy, who is representing Coronado, said his client wants the public to be told what the other board members have agreed to.

"The school district had an obligation to make that vote public so people could understand and be able to interpret the actions of their elected officials," Lacy said. "They actually had an extended discussion in closed session about ways to avoid publicly revealing that they had made this settlement with the ACLU representative."

The board has several weeks to report what happened in the closed session. If it doesn't, Coronado will file a misconduct lawsuit.
