Subject: National Diversity Conference for Youth

Please spread the word about an exciting opportunity for GLBT teens: the National Diversity Conference for Youth, to be held Feb. 18-21, 1998, in Denver, Colorado. Cherry Creek Schools, Denver Public Schools, and The National Conference, a human relations agency dedicated to fighting intolerance and building understanding, are bringing together teens (grades 9-12) from all over the country. We're excited because the conference openly includes the GLBT kids (and those with GLBT families) and gives us a chance to emphasize that diversity is much more inclusive than just racial or religious. We have gay teens and gay advocacy groups on the planning committee and in the workshops, and we want to be sure we have as diverse a set of conference attendees as we have planners. We hope you will publicize, and bring some students yourselves!

The conference will be exciting. President Clinton has it "under serious consideration" that he will be keynote speaker. Workshops, entertainment, and other speakers will include some well known names. Topics cover the broadest definition of diversity: socioeconomic concerns; cliques and peer pressure; understanding gay, lesbian, and bisexual student issues; student rights; respecting different religious views; understanding issues of students with disabilities; safe schools; racism and sexism topics; and more. We'll have an adult track also. If you know of good presenters, we'd love suggestions immediately.

Up to 16 students can come with adult sponsors from a school, agency, or organization. (The cap is temporary until we're sure everyone has a chance.) For more information, call or fax (303) 221-1827 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Mountain Time, or write National Diversity Conference for Youth, 9300 East Union Ave., Englewood, CO 80111. Thanks for spreading the word!
