(Denver, CO) - The National Youth Advocacy Coalition (NYAC) will host its First Annual Western Regional Conference, in Denver, CO, May 12-14 1999. The Western Regional Conference is a weekend long conference, sponsored by NYAC, Open and Affirming Sexual Orientation Support (OASOS); Rainbow Alley; and Inside/Out.
This skills building conference is designed for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning and allied youth, advisors, counselors, parents, friends, program directors and/or campus organization sponsors of GLBT youth. It will also provide GLBT youth, from across the region, an opportunity to come together to network, participate in skills building workshops, discussion groups and caucus sessions in a safe and affirming environment. The weekend is not only packed full of informative workshops and lectures, but also includes a screening of the independent film, The Brandon Teena Story. Other social activities include Denver's Queer Prom, sponsored by Rainbow Alley; a talent show featuring some of the areas best music and dramatic performers; and a presentation of Lisa Lucero's one-woman show, "Impossible Body."
OASOS, a program of the Boulder County Health Department, is for anyone under 21 years of age that is GLBT or questioning their sexuality and/or gender. OASOS meets in Boulder & Longmont once a week and is open to those looking for a safe place to talk about issues of sexuality and gender.
Inside/Out is a support and activity program sponsored by Community Council for Adolescent Development (c-CAD), whose mission is to foster a community that nurtures the development of a positive sexual identity in all adolescents, especially homosexual, bisexual and transgendered adolescents.
Rainbow Alley is a division of Youth Services, part of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Community Services Center of Colorado. The Alley is a drop in Center for GLBTQ youth created to provide support services and social events for the queer youth population of Colorado. The mission of Youth Services is to provide support, education and fun with trained staff in a structured, caring environment to all GLBTQ youth under 26, their families and their communities.
The National Youth Advocacy Coalition is the only national organization solely focused on advocacy, education, and information addressing the broad range of issues facing gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth. NYAC works to end discrimination against these young people and to ensure their physical and emotional well being. NYAC represents the interests of GLBT youth and the over 500 organizations nationwide providing support services to GLBT youth.
