Dear Safe Schools Coalition members and friends,
GLSEN National Conference: Teaching Respect for All (July 16-18; Washington, DC)
*****************************************************
GLSEN (the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) Announces Plans for 2004 National Conference, Teaching Respect for All, to be held in Washington July 16-18
New structure to provide more focused and expert assistance to grassroots activists
The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) announced today its plans for its 2004 National Conference, Teaching Respect for All, to be held at American University in Washington on July 16-18, 2004. Held annually since the inaugural event in Salt Lake City in 1997, TRA is the premier national summit for those working to end anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) bias in America's K-12 schools. It is attended by hundreds of students, school staff, parents, and community members who are playing leadership positions within GLSEN chapters, student clubs (commonly known as gay-straight alliances or GSAs), and allied organizations working to create safe schools for LGBT people
The 2004 TRA conference will utilize a new structure in order to provide more focused and expert assistance to grassroots activists. Attendees will stay in residence on the American University campus throughout the event to maximize learning and networking opportunities. The conference program is split into two segments. One segment will include general sessions to be attended by all participants, which will develop skills that are needed by all leaders, such as communications/media training. The remaining time will feature tracks, chosen by attendees, where they will spend the bulk of training time at the event, so that they might receive in-depth training on a particular program area which they can then utilize when they return home. Track sessions will be led by GLSEN staff and grassroots volunteers with extensive experience in each focus area. Tracks will include:
Organizing 101: Designed for those who are new to leadership roles in GLSEN chapters, this track will cover "basics" such as how to build a board, how to recruit members and volunteers, how to raise money, and how to make decisions as to what initiatives to launch.
Teacher Training: This track is appropriate for those seeking to implement GLSEN's "Training of Trainers" program in their community, in order to better equip educators in their community to address LGBT issues.
Following the close of the conference on Sunday evening, July 18, participants will have the option of staying in Washington for an "Action Day" to take place on Monday, July 19. The Action Day will feature specialized training and the opportunity to put what participants have learned over the weekend into action, and may include visits to educate Congresspeople and/or their staff on Capitol Hill.
"We're very excited to be able to offer such a comprehensive and in-depth training on the issues that are key to making schools places where students learn to value and respect all people, regardless of sexual orientation and/or gender identity/expression," said GLSEN's Executive Director Kevin Jennings. "The new structure of TRA will provide those working at the grassroots with the kind of expert information they need to truly make a difference."
Those interested in attending TRA 2004 are asked to apply, so that GLSEN can insure that participants are routed to the right track and can develop a training that speaks to the needs of attendees. Application forms will be available on-line at http://www.glsen.org by Tuesday, February 3, 2004.
The new model for GLSEN's national conference will also make it less expensive for individual attendees. Registration for TRA is $150, with a special rate of $100 for current high school students and those with limited incomes. An "early bird" rate of $70 for students/limited income and $100 for adults is provided for those who register by March 15, and a final deadline for applications is April 15. An additional fee of $50 for adults and $35 for students is required for the Monday July 19 "Action Day." The lodging/food costs are $325 per adult and $275 per K-12 student. Some financial aid for both student and adult participants is available, and financial aid applications will be available on-line at http://www.glsen.org.
