New York--Today, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN, announced its youth scholarships, available for people age 23 and under who wish to attend Teaching Respect for All 2001, the annual national conference to be held in Washington, DC, September 21-23, 2001. Over the past three years, youth scholarships have defrayed the expenses of over 300 young people, so they may attend three days of workshops, networking opportunities, and events. "GLSEN stands by the efforts that youth are making across this country to eliminate bias against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons in K-12 schools," said Kevin Jennings, Executive Director. "As a community-based organization, GLSEN and its chapters have found strength when working together--teachers, administrators, parents, tax payers and especially students."
Teaching Respect for All, now in its fifth year, has emerged as the premiere conference for those interested in eliminating anti-gay bias in K-12 schools. Last year's conference brought over 1,000 participants and offered more than 60 workshops, including youth-specific workshops. Additionally, youth-only spaces and a youth dance will allow students to connect and be empowered to create change in their own lives.
"I met the most amazing youth leaders who were taking the Day of Silence Project into their schools, to create real change from within the school system," said Jessie Gilliam, 23-year-old presenter of the Day of Silence Project workshop at Teaching Respect for All 2000. "The conference was awesome because it provides for opportunities like these, where youth teach other youth, through sharing resources, presenting workshops and just telling each other what does and doesn't work for each of their schools."
Scholarships can be applied for on the GLSEN website at http://www.glsen.org or by requesting an application from 212.727.0135 x134. The final deadline for all applications is July 17, 2001.
