GLSEN/MIAM (GAY, LESBIAN, STRAIGHT EDUCATION NETWORK) BEGINS 6TH YEAR OF TRAINING FOR SOUTH FLORIDA EDUCATORS ON GLBTQ (GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER AND QUESTIONING) YOUTH ISSUES
GLSEN/Miami begins its 6th year of training South Florida educators as it facilitates its widely-acclaimed "School Safety & Sexual Minority Youth Issues" workshop on Friday, October 15, 2004 (Miami-Dade County Public School Teacher Planning Day) from 8AM - 3:30 PM at MAST Academy on Key Biscayne.
The training is accreditated by the State of Florida Department of Education in collaboration with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Teacher Education Center (TEC) and awards 10 Master Plan Points for Florida Teacher Re-certification for those who complete the training assigments.
Robert Loupo, Co-chair of GLSEN/Miami, and facilitator or the training, states "We've trained over 600 educators in South Florida on issues facing glbtq students in schools, and from the feedback we get from the educators, they are very grateful for the opportunity to learn about these issues. Many have wanted to help, but they just didn't know how. These workshops help give them the tools they need."
The training helps teachers, counselors, administrators and staff understand the issues that glbt and questioning youth face and how these issues affect their learning environment and educational achievement.
The morning portion features a panel of glbtq youth who speak about their school experiences and what helped them most in school.
The afternoon portion focuses on effective intervention and prevention strategies for establishing safe classrooms and schools, with specific recommendations for various academic disciplines.
The workshop is free to all educators, but is limited to 30 participants.
The workshop is sponsored by GLSEN/Miami in collaboration with United Teachers of Dade (UTD), the Dade Community Foundation, and the Gamma Mu Foundation and the Division of Student Services of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
