Visions and Voices: From Affirmation to Action

Fourth Annual GLSEN Midwest Regional Conference
March 27-29, 1998
The Michigan League, at the University of Michigan
Ann Arbor, MI

**************************************************************************** *****************

The Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is the largest national organization that brings together gay, straight, and bisexual teachers, counselors, administrators, parents, students, and concerned citizens to work together to address issues of discrimination, inclusion, and safety faced by gay, lesbian, and bisexual students (and their friends and family) in K-12 public, parochial, and independent schools.

GLSEN strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation.

GLSEN conferences provide attendees with concrete tools they can use to make their work with youth inclusive of issues of sexual orientation. The Midwest conference will be an opportunity to collectively engage in learning and dialogue where we will aqcuire the skills to turn our VISIONS of safety and inclusivity into ACTION, AFFIRMING all students in our schools, and giving VOICE to the ideals of justice.

The conference is open to all people, regardless of sexual orientation, profession, or age, who are concerned about creating safe space for ALL youth.

For more information or to receive registration materials, call Holly at 313-484-4614 or email MidwestGLSENconf@juno.com

Below you will find a call for proposals for workshops to be presented at the conference. Please share your expertise, experience, and talents with us!

Please pass on conference information and proposal application to other individuals and groups you think may be interested. Thank you!

Usually, mission statements "tell" you what's going on. We'd like to move away from that and invite people to be part of "developing" what will happen at this conference. To do this, we will invoke a mechanism used by The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

Friends have long used sets of questions called queries to help them focus clearly on issues before them. As we invite you to consider proposing a workshop for the 4th Annual GLSEN Midwest Regional Conference, we offer you these queries on our conference theme: "Visions and Voices: From Affirmation to Action." We hope they will help you to season and focus the thoughts you may have to share with all of us.

*VISIONS*

*VOICES* *AFFIRMATIONS AND ACTION* Interested individuals and organizations are invited to submit proposals for workshop sessions by reflecting on the above queries and completing the following form. GLSEN will provide complimentary conference registration for those chosen to present, but cannot cover travel or other expenses.

If there will be more than one presenter for your proposed workshop, please copy Part 1 of this form and complete all contact and demographic information for EACH presenter, and send together along with Part 2.
